Ashley Scott, Miss Italia USA 2010

Italian American Ashley Scott, whose  maternal grandparents hail from Sicily and Naples, was crowned Miss Italia USA 2010 before an enthusiastic crowd at the Stamford Palace Theatre in Stamford, Connecticut on Sunday, April 25, 2010.  New Jersey’s Alyssa Romano was crowned Miss Italia North America 2010.  Ashley and Alyssa will travel to Jesolo, near Venice , Italy, where they will compete against contestants from 49 countries.     The Miss Italia nel Mondo pageant was established by Enzo Mirigliani, whose father had emigrated to the United States and later returned to Italy. As Enzo once said, “This is in memory of my father and of all immigrants like him, who had to leave their beautiful country to find work elsewhere, we have created this pageant so that their daughters can participate in an experience bringing them back to their roots.”

Enzo’s daughter Patrizia Mirigliani, who attended the event,  is carrying forward her father’s legacy as manager of the organization that directs the pageant.  She spoke movingly about the goal of the pageant as a way of uniting and celebrating  the cultures of Italians abroad.

Among the other highlights of the evening were performances by Italian singer Giada Valenti, who sang a beautiful rendition of  the Italian national anthem and the classical Italian song, Io che non vivo senza te (“You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me”).  The event was followed by a reception during which guests enjoyed, among other culinary delights, Italian specialties catered by the Arthur Avenue Retail Market, the original Italian deli in Little Italy, NYC. The 2010 Miss Italia USA pageant was organized by Fucsia Nissoli.
